How Is the MYP Implemented at Scotts Valley Middle School?
At SVMS, the MYP is formally implemented through specific cross-curricular units, the introduction of Language B, and integration of the arts and technology into the whole curriculum. In each class at SVMS, specific assignments are assessed according to MYP rubrics. The teachers start compiling these works in individual portfolios (one for each student) at the beginning of sixth grade.
This table shows the cross-curricular units offered at SVMS:
Each of the MYP units connects all Subject Groups in some way. For example, the Riddle of the Sphinx (Egypt) unit in the 6th grade entails the following:
- Language A: Writing a newspaper article
- Language B: Studying ancient hieroglyphics
- Humanities: Studying major contributions and individuals from Ancient Egypt
- Science: Learning about paper making, reed plants, deserts, and floods
- Math: Computing the surface area and volume of a pyramid, learning Egyptian numbers, and drawing to scale
- Arts: Studying hieroglyphics and cartouche design
- Physical Education: Understanding that fitness was a major component of Egyptian life through monitoring student cardiovascular activities
- Technology: Learning skills in research, word-processing, and layout
The culminating activity for this cross-curricular unit is to create an Egyptian newspaper using information gathered from all eight Subject Groups.
