How Is the MYP Implemented at Scotts Valley High School?
In the MYP at SVHS, students learn to formulate and contemplate a series of essential questions. For example, in 9th grade students consider this question in the context of each course: "How does the culture of Scotts Valley make you who you are, and how does it influence your perspective?" In 10th grade, students ask themselves: "How does the environment affect who you are, and how do you affect the environment?"
Students become increasingly self-directed as they take in information and form their own conclusions. This process of learning how to ask thought-provoking questions in a variety of contexts, and how to develop conclusions based on personal knowledge and understanding, is the goal of the MYP for each student.
Teachers continue to compile portfolios of each student's work in the eight MYP Subject Groups. Students refine their understanding and use of the MYP rubrics as a measure of their knowledge, progress, and ability. The Personal Project, completed by participating students in the 10th grade, further demonstrates the student's understanding of the Areas of Interaction.
After completing the 9th and 10th grades in the MYP, a student can earn one of three forms of recognition: a Record of Achievement, a Record of Achievement with Distinction, or an MYP Certificate. All students will have a letter describing MYP attached to their high school transcript.
